AARP: Health Plan Would Raise Costs for Older Americans

Sen. Elizabeth Warren D-Mass. speaks with reporters as Democrats criticize the Republican health care plan at the Capitol in Washington Tuesday March 14 2017

The Republican replacement plan only takes into account age, and ignores income and local market conditions.

"Older Americans get hit two ways with the proposed Republican plan", said Lydia Mitts, associate director of affordability initiatives at Families USA, a health advocacy group. It has been three years and I still haven't used up my tax credit.

The House Republican health care bill, created to repeal and replace Obamacare, will go to Congress for a vote this Thursday. Likewise, if you don't pay income tax, the tax credit is worthless.

"They haven't really said why their forecast of Affordable Care Act [ACA] enrollment was wrong", Furchtgott-Roth said, using another name for Obamacare.

But older Americans would see their premiums skyrocket by 20% to 25% under the Republican plan. It wasn't really the Affordable Care Act. Having to pay thousands more for health insurance could force many to make hard choices between food, medicine, housing and other basic necessities.

Premiums for people who bought their own health coverage rose an estimated 22 percent this year. Why would this plan include a tax break for the rich at the expense of the poor and middle class?

Members of Republican leadership and from the committees the bill has already passed through will be milling around the space and available for interviews with reporters.

He apparently got them - but, in Aderholt's case, only after Trump told him that his concerns about the negative effect on older Americans would be addressed.

"After considering the current healthcare bill in a thorough and deliberate manner, I have concluded that, although the American Health Care Act focuses on several much-needed reforms to our healthcare system, in its current form I can not support this legislation", Fitzpatrick wrote on Facebook on Sunday.

That minimum was the equivalent of the average ACA bronze plan with a deductible of just over $6,000 (or for young adults, a catastrophic plan).

"What they have put forth is a awful bill", said House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi.

Some checks would remain in place. "So as long as those questions continue to be asked, then the debate about whether everyone - regardless of income, regardless of age, gender - is entitled to health care is going to continue".

Take the insurance companies out of the health care system all together and have the government negotiate with the drug companies to reduce the cost of prescription drugs.

Logically, the ACA needs to be maintained, and not replaced by the AHCA. That's good news because people 50-plus are more likely to have a preexisting health issue.

We admit that we have been critical of the Affordable Care Act in the past, mainly because it did virtually nothing to curb soaring health care costs.
