Scotland open with win at World Women's Curling Championship

Muirhead releived to open up World Championships with win

Scotland defeated the United States 9-8 after an extra end, while Switzerland began their quest for a fourth consecutive crown by overcoming Germany 7-5.

The U.S. led 3-1 through four ends, but a single in the fifth and a deuce in the sixth gave Homan and company their first lead of the day.

In the fourth end Canada skip Rachel Homan raised one of her own stones into a scoring position, taking out a German stone and scoring one point for a 3-1 lead.

The Americans had last stone advantage in that extra end but Roth could only remove one of two Scottish stones near the button, giving Scotland another single stone steal and the 9-8 win.

"We knew what we had to do after dropping that game [against Italy] this morning, and that was to come out sharp", Muirhead said.

"We hadn't played on that ice yet so we were kind of guessing on some lines and played some pretty good shots".

"I wouldn't say we were bad - we had a few dodgy stones that we needed to sort out, which put us on the back foot, but they played well". And we got that miss but unfortunately didn't come away with the three.

"They took us right to the ninth and it was just a game of a shot here or there".

"It's still early in the week, and obviously disappointing, but there's a long way to go".

Also at 3-0 after Sunday's games were the Czech Republic and Switzerland.

Canada lead the standings after their 10-9 extra end win over Russian Federation, with three wins from three.

Canada followed up their win by beating Germany 6-2 in the second session.

Fresh off his first career BRIER title, Brad Gushue and his Newfoundland and Labrador rink hit the ice to take on a star-studded field that also features Olympic silver medallist David Murdoch of Scotland, Olympic bronze medallist John Shuster of US, and two-time World Champion and Olympic bronze medallist Niklas Edin of Sweden.
