Comey: FBI launched investigation into Russian Federation meddling in July

FBI director: 'No information' to support Trump wiretapping claims

James Comey confirmed a probe was underway while testifying to the House Intelligence Committee this afternoon during a hearing looking into possible Russian interference in last year's U.S. election.

After Trump's Twitter posting March 4 claiming that former President Barack Obama "had my "wires tapped" in Trump Tower just before the victory", Comey unsuccessfully urged the Justice Department to publicly deny the allegation, according to a USA official who requested anonymity in order to discuss sensitive issues. The FBI is investigating vote interference, the Russian "hacking" of the election, and the possible coordination with the Trump camp.

Later, Mr Comey said that while it is not FBI practice to confirm the existence of ongoing investigations involving classified matters.

On Sunday, the top Democrat on the intel committee, Rep. Adam Schiff (D-California) claimed, contrary to Clapper, that there is evidence of collusion. I assume Devin Nunes, the Republican chairman of the committee, is going to push Comey to say whether any sort of surveillance was conducted.

FBI director James Comey has confirmed an investigation is under way into possible links between Russia and associates of United States president Donald Trump, as part of a wider probe into Russian interference in the presidential election.

Earlier at the hearing, he confirmed publicly for the first time that the FBI is investigating possible collusion between the Trump campaign and the Russian government.

"Was there a physical wiretap of Trump Tower?"

"The one crime we know that's been committed is that one: the leaking of someone's name.", Mr Nunes told Fox News.

We have a tremendous group of people that listen, and I can get around the media when the media doesn't tell the truth, so I like that.

The Senate Intelligence Committee has scheduled a similar hearing for later in the month.

"He will either repudiate the wiretapping claim or he will leave open the idea that there is an investigation of the president's inner circle", Bash said. Amid a furor over whether Moscow tried to influence the presidential race on Trump's behalf to the detriment of Democrat Hillary Clinton, lawmakers said they would make public as much of their investigations as possible.
