Moritz Wagner scored a career-high 26 points on Sunday, and No. 7 seed MI rallied from an eight-point halftime deficit to stun No. 2 seed Louisville 73-69 in Midwest Regional second-round action in Bankers Life Fieldhouse.
With the win, MI will now take on No. 3 OR in the first Sweet 16 game in Kansas City.
The Wolverines trailed 45-36 with 16:09 remaining before Wagner hit a layup to ignite a 17-6 run.
The Wildcats (31-5) led 58-51 with 4:06 left when freshman De'Aaron Fox made a steal near midcourt and drove for a dunk, but the Shockers (31-5) rallied, pulling within 63-62 on freshman Landry Shamet's 3-pointer with 55.7 seconds left.
OR barely escaped the same fate as Louisville.
Dorsey hit a contested go-ahead 3-pointer from the top of the arc with 38.4 seconds to play, then E.C. Matthews airballed a long 3 in the waning moments trying to force overtime, and third-seeded OR rallied in the second half to beat upstart No. 11 Rhode Island 75-72 on Sunday and reach the Midwest Regional. Both teams shot the ball well with URI holding a small 50%-48% advantage that added up to five more field goals but OR went to the line 27 times and had 12 more makes which was the decisive stat. Tyler Dorsey saved the Ducks as he poured in a contest high 27 points with five yanks on 9-10 from the floor with Dillon Brooks adding 19 points and seven boards on 7-20 from the field while six others combined to contribute 24 points.
Second-seeded Duke was knocked out by SC as Sindarius Thornwell pumped in 24 points in the Gamecocks' 88-81 stunner against the Blue Devils.
MI is also good at chasing shooters off the three-point line. Chris Silva led South Carolina's comeback by scoring 13 of his 17 points after intermission. MI attempted just six three balls in the second half, making three of them.
