Electronics are now banned on Royal Jordanian flights into the U.S

"Following instructions from the concerned USA departments", the airline tweeted, all electronics are banned on US-bound flights, with an exception for cellphones and medical devices.

A tweet from the airline's official account listed new rules for all passengers flying in and out of the USA that spell horror for anyone who gets bored on long distance journeys. The directive is to ensure enhanced security measures at select airports for a limited duration.

A media spokesman from the U.S. Department of Homeland Security said the agency had "no comment on potential security precautions", but said they would provide any updates.

A State Department officials says embassy officials have been notifying relevant countries and airlines.

Citing instructions from "concerned U.S. departments", Royal Jordanian Airlines has reportedly banned all electronic or electrical devices from carry-on luggage on flights to and from New York, Chicago, Detroit and Montreal effective Tuesday, March 21.

The Amman, Jordan-based carrier said that starting Tuesday, March 21 it will only allow phones and medical devices to be carried in the cabin of its flights.

In its tweet, Royal Jordanian referenced "instructions from the concerned US departments" but did not offer further details.

The airline serves New York's John F. Kennedy International Airport, Chicago's O'Hare International Airport, as well Montreal and Detroit.

The U.S. Transportation Security Administration has a lengthy list of things that are prohibited from being brought onto planes, but electronic devices are not on it.
