'Star Wars' Could Be Phasing Out Legacy Characters in Future Films
20 March 2017, 05:50 | Megan Pierce
Prior to the release of Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, there was a school of thought that said that movie was the greatest challenge, because it needed to capture the essence of the best Star Wars films while still functioning as its own story and tying in to the broader narrative, in chronological terms.
We spoke to Whitta soon after that was said and the internet blew up with speculation.
"Literally in the very first days working on the film we were asking ourselves those questions". What's more, it didn't have any of the classic John Williams score, and the final scene also had dialogue spoken by Princess Leia (all previous Star Wars movies ending without dialogue). Or do they have all the same furniture and trappings? 'It was never actually in a draft of the script.
Initially Gareth, a hardcore Star Wars fan, was like, "You've gotta have an opening crawl". I'm speaking purely as a fan.
Whitta wouldn't comment on if his crawl was a broader universe thing or just a description of the film's current prologue, but it nearly doesn't matter. For example, the film didn't originally include Bodhi Rook or Chirrut Imwe, two characters who gave the film its emotional depth. Those characters were all added by the second screenwriter, Chris Weitz. After all, it's about Han Solo, and we all know what became of him.
Either way, Whitta believes not having a crawl was the right call to set the tone for this new kind of movie. "I really like the fact that we tried to do something different". And I understand there are some people out there that really want things the way they want them, and they're upset there isn't an crawl. "Yes, you see Leia, yes, you see the Death Star and Vader, because those are elements of that story and they belong there, you can't tell that story without those characters", he explained to SuperHeroHype.
Rogue One follows a small band of rebels who uncover a conspiracy and attempt to steal the plans of the Death Star, the Galactic Empire's ultimate weapon. Whitta pointed out that even though Rogue One and the upcoming Han Solo movie are standalones, that they're still very reliant on familar elements from the existing films, even the prequels. (The A.V. Club will have a full interview with Edwards later this week about his concerns with making a movie for Disney about a suicide mission.) The next standalone prequel film in the Star Wars universe is likely to be less brutal.
