Holyrood's Brexit minister has criticised the UK Government after claiming Tory politicians in London "forgot" to inform Scotland of the date when Article 50 will be triggered.

"So Britain will exit the European Union on 29 March 2019", the Downing Street spokesperson said. The Prime Minister will give a statement to Parliament as well.

A spokesman for the European Commission said: "Everything is ready on this side". Both sides agree that giving such citizens a guarantee that they will be able to stay where they are is a top priority.

Sterling slipped from a three-week high against the dollar on what Brexit minister David Davis described as a move taking Britain to "the threshold of the most important negotiation for this country for a generation".

But other constitutional experts think this is highly unlikely to work - unless a penitent Britain can persuade the rest of the European Union to agree to turn back the clock.

Wilson expects a long period of volatility for the pound and United Kingdom assets as the government begins Brexit negotiations.

Schinas spoke after the British government earlier the same day confirmed that it would invoke Article 50 of the European Union treaty, which governs the divorce procedure, on 29 March.

"We want negotiations to start promptly", he said.

"Sterling handed back its gains and turned negative for the day as the market reacted to the announcement - despite the fact it's a known quantity we have to assume that the stark reality of exiting the European Union is hitting home", said Neil Wilson, analyst at ETX Capital. Britain is now more divided at home and isolated overseas.

"We will hold the Government to account every step of the way and fight to secure jobs and the economy, workers' rights and environmental and consumer protection".

Tim Farron, leader of the Liberal Democratic Party, said, "Theresa May is embarking on an extreme and divisive Brexit". She has rushed this through without a plan, and without a clue.

May has said she wants to make Brexit as painless as possible. May will also announce the news in Parliament.

The extra measures will place "a huge burden" on Parliament and government departments, the think tank says.

IFG's research director, Dr Hannah White, told BBC Radio Four's Today programme: "The estimates we have heard are something between ten and 15 Bills required in the next two parliamentary sessions".
