3-Year-Old Boy Shot In The Head During 'Cops-And-Robbers' Game

Boy, 3, Critically Injured After Shooting on Chicago's South Side

Police called the shooting in the 6200 block of South Aberdeen Street "a travesty".

A 3-year-old boy was shot in the head in an apparent accident in a home in the Englewood neighborhood Thursday afternoon, authorities said.

Chicago police said Thursday the 3-year-old boy was the youngest of at least four children left home unsupervised in an apartment without heat or hot water.

The parents of a Chicago toddler who was accidently shot in the head have been charged with crimes related to the shooting and the care of their other children. The boy is now in critical condition at Comer Children's Hospital. Sources said he was out of surgery Friday morning, but was still in very critical condition. Three guns were recovered from the home, along with a significant amount of drugs. The boy's parents are being questioned by police.

Police said the mother appeared to have a firearm owner identification card, meaning she legally owned the handgun used in the shooting. "So whether or not, whose gun it is, it's up to the Chicago Police Department to trace that gun, but I wish that gun had never been inside that home in the first place", he said.

"DCFS has had prior contact with this family, including an indicated finding against the father for neglect in 2009, and two indicated findings against the mother for neglect in February 2013 and March 2013", the statement from the agency said. "We've said it over and over again, guns don't belong in the house with children".

No charges have been announced in the case. Area South detectives were investigating.
