United Kingdom ready to launch Brexit process on March 29

20 March 2017, 11:00 | Darnell Patrick

Holyrood's Brexit minister has criticised the UK Government after claiming Tory politicians in London "forgot" to inform Scotland of the date when Article 50 will be triggered.

With the Queen now having given Royal Assent to the Article 50 Bill, the United Kingdom is on the verge of starting negotiations to withdraw from the European Union.

She'll do that by sending a letter to the European Council and giving a statement in Parliament afterward. As a result, United Kingdom officials have already approached the World Trade Organization to see what they can do in case they cannot reach a deal within the two-year deadline.

David Davis, Britain's Brexit secretary called the departure from the European Union "the most important negotiation for this country in a generation". Following the two-year time frame for withdrawal negotiations, it's expected that Brexit will happen in March 2019.

After Theresa May's Brexit speech in January we asked the public what they thought of her negotiation aims and, on the whole, they gave them the thumbs up.

"The right to remain for these non-UK EU citizens must be guaranteed at the earliest opportunity to provide reassurance to smaller firms and their work forces".

Downing Street expects that in the immediate aftermath of triggering Article 50, the remaining 27 European Union member states will agree terms and give an initial response within 48 hours.

Mrs May will address MPs in a statement to the House of Commons following her regular weekly session of Prime Minister's Questions on March 29.

Before negotiations with Britain can actually start, the Council, in the shape of ministers sitting in the General Affairs Council (GAC), must approve the recommendations by issuing legally binding "negotiating directives" to Barnier.

"President Tusk has said he expects an initial response within 48 hours".

The Supreme Court ruled in January that May's government must obtain approval from the British parliament to trigger Article 50, prompting the introduction of emergency legislation.

The move comes nine months after Britain voted 51.9 percent to 48.1 percent in favour of Brexit in a referendum on 23 June, 2016.

Britain will not actually leave the European Union until early 2019, ideally having tied up a mutually acceptable exit deal. If the rest of the European Union agrees, the two-year negotiating period can be extended, leaving Britain in the European Union for a while longer.

The prime minister has said that "now is not the time", and is expected to visit Scotland as part of a pre-Brexit tour of Britain that began on Monday in Wales and will also take in Northern Ireland.
