Brexit What we know

Brexit What we know

In its report, Legislating Brexit, the IFG says that with the average Queen's Speech announcing only 20 new bills, the introduction of 15 Brexit bills before the United Kingdom even exits the European Union "will leave very little space for non-Brexit related legislation".

Sharon Hodgson, MP for Washington and Sunderland West, said: "Now that we know the date when the Prime Minister will trigger Article 50, it is important that Parliamentarians renew our focus to hold the Government to account as they enter the formal negotiations".

The historic start of the process, 44 years after the United Kingdom joined the EEC in 1973, will trigger a two-year countdown for negotiations over the exit terms and any interim trade deal.

A Government spokesman said: "This Government will harness the skills and resources across all departments to ensure that the statute book functions effectively on the day we leave - as part of delivering a smooth and orderly Brexit". But economists and government officials have warned that Britain's exit is likely to be turbulent, and some within the prime minister's ruling Conservative Party have pushed for her to call an early election this spring. However, the European Council wants to sort out Britain's "divorce bill" from the bloc before any future relationship is agreed.

Theresa May is expected to visit Wales this week as she commences a tour of the devolved nations ahead of triggering Article 50 within the next fortnight.

German Finance Minister Wolfgang Schaeuble said as he arrived Monday at a meeting in Brussels with his eurozone counterparts: "Britain's payment obligations are valid for as long as they are set out in the treaties".

Mrs May says she will trigger the process by the end of the month.

Britain joined in 1973, but has always been a somewhat reluctant member, with a large contingent of euroskeptic politicians and journalists regularly railing against regulations imposed by European Union headquarters in Brussels.

Barnier has said that he expects a deal to be agreed in 2018 and ratified in 2019.

Later this week, EU leaders will gather in Rome to mark the 60th anniversary of the Treaties of Rome, which established the European Economic Community - the initial forerunner to the EU.

Commission President Jean-Claude Juncker warned that London may have to abandon hopes of a trade deal unless it accepts the terms offered by the European Union, which are widely expected to include a hefty divorce bill. May has already announced she will not be attending the event.
