Rock singer Prince performs at the Forum in Inglewood Calif. during his opening show Feb. 18 1985
Ahead of the release of his new standup specials at Netflix, Dave Chappelle recently met up with Gayle King for a lengthy CBS This Morning interview that aired today, which covers everything from his decision to walk away from Chappelle's Show to living in a small OH town to how his thoughts on standup, fame, and spending more time on himself and his family have evolved over the years. He was at a heightening time in his career, with the success and popularity of Comedy Central's Chappelle's Show. But in your mind you're like, "That (expletive) is insane". In previous stand-up sets, Chappelle blasted the duo for copying his show, joking about "watching Key and Peele do my show the last five (expletive) years". He used to have these parties where we would go over to his house, and there would be all these musicians that I admired, and they'd just do these jam sessions in the basement.
Dave Chappelle's upcoming Netflix comedy specials arrive on the streaming service on Tuesday. At the end of the day. you don't have that much control over it.
Elsewhere in the interview, Chappelle discusses how his life has changed for the better since leaving "Chappelle's Show", what living in a small town means to him, what he hopes to do with his life, and more.
"I think there was a speculation that Dave doesn't like Key & Peele or Dave thinks, 'Okay, '" King said. "He basically said to me that comedy is a reconciliation of paradox", Chappelle told King. "I think that that was the irreconcilable moment for me-that I was in this very successful place, but the emotional content of it didn't feel anything like what I imagined success should feel like".
"I found an altitude I was comfortable with". I've been all over the country touring all my life, but I never saw anything. "It wasn't like I brushed past them like 'I don't want to hear it, ' I had time to stop like 'You do?' It was just like the way that I engaged with the world was different".
After the vast success of Chappelle's Show, the fame had gotten too much.
He also spoke on something that people have been saying for years, that the Key & Peele show stole a lot of his swag.
