Facebook to showcase its hardware products

Facebook, it seems, is keen to foray into the hardware space against established names like Apple and Google.

The job listing, which was previously reported by Business Insider, hints that Facebook has bigger ambitions for consumer hardware, pitting it against established hardware players like Apple and Alphabet, as well as upstarts like Snap, which introduced a set of digital photo-glasses called Spectacles a year ago.

The 22,000-square-foot lab at its Menlo Park, California, headquarters will help the social networking giant perform fast prototyping and modelling of new hardware products and components, reports said.

Facebook will reveal "four advanced technology projects" at its F8 conference in April, according to a report by Business Insider. In December, the secretive Building 8 reportedly entered into an agreement with 17 universities to boost research and development.

In a Q&A past year, Facebook's CEO described how people would be able to "capture a thought, what you're thinking or feeling in kind of its ideal and flawless form in your head, and be able to share that with the world". The same will focus on everything ranging from augmented reality (AR) to drones and brain-scanning technology that sounds like straight out of a sci-fi movie. The project is now headed by neuroscientist John Hopkins, who has helped to develop a mind-controlled prosthetic arm, reports Business Insider.

The report adds that Facebook has hired a former John Hopkins neuroscientist to develop a mind-controlled prosthetic arm along with an interventional cardiologist from Stanford with experience in medical device development. Building 8 is now hiring for positions in market development, product marketing, customer operations, customer support and localization, and global sales.
