Ghana: Accident at popular Kintampo waterfalls kills 20 students

The accident at the Kintampo Waterfalls in the Brong Ahafo Region which claimed 18 lives could have an adverse effect on the country's tourism sector, Frank Siaw-Otu, PRO of the Ministry of Tourism, has said. "Others are tourists. We are trying to save those who are trapped by cutting the trees with chainsaws".

The tree crushed students who were swimming in a pool at the base of the waterfall, local police chief Owusu Boampong told the BBC.

Authorities said 22 other individuals are now being treated at a local hospital for injuries sustained in the accident.

Ghana's Tourism Minister Catherine Afeku, who is heading to the scene to meet the families of victims, said an investigation would be conducted.
