Netflix scrapping star ratings system in favour of 'thumbs up, down' reviews
21 March 2017, 01:55 | Ross Houston
Not movie stars, per se, but rather the streaming service's system for rating the programs they watched with one to five stars.
Last January, Netflix CPO Neil Hunt told Business Insider that Netflixwanted to do away with the stars, since it considered them a poor method of understanding what shows and movies people liked.
Netflix will also add a feature which they call "per cent match".
The thumb system was previously tested out on "thousands of members" past year, and it will be rolling out for everyone in the next few weeks. The hope is to have the new model make the recommendations more accurate - thumbs up means enjoyed, thumbs down means didn't enjoy. However it seems that Netflix has decided that the star rating system is so "yesterday" and have chose to get rid of it.
For its part, Netflix hopes that this change will actually be better for users than worse. Their new system got 200% more ratings than the former star ratings. Just as thumbing up or down on Facebook give you the instant emotional connection to the thing you're reacting to, doing something similar on Netflix will have a similar effect.

US Airstrike Hit North Syria Mosque, Killing Scores
The strike was condemned by the Islamist group Ahrar al-Sham, which said targeting mosques was a war crime under worldwide law. Obtaining accurate independent figures is hard because of the challenges of reporting in the multi-sided Syrian civil war.
This switch away from ratings to a thumbs-up/thumbs-down system feels long overdue. And if a show has a less than 50 percent rating for you, the rating won't show up at all.
Netflix will still show a percentage next to a title, but that number will represent how likely it is for you to enjoy that title. That system "really projects what you think you want to tell the world".
The way Netflix users rate movies and TV shows is set to change. As a result, the streaming service will roll out the thumbs system in the coming weeks. Matches with a sub-fifty-percent rating will not be presented to the user.
High matches will be around 88%, less strong fits could be around 60% and matches under 50% won't be displayed.
