Smile, because there's now a Happiness Street in Dubai
Vice President and Prime Minister and Ruler of Dubai, His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, has announced the creation of the World Happiness Council to increase global efforts to improve happiness. The inauguration coincided with the International Day of Happiness. The second phase of the Mohammad Bin Rashid Al Maktoum Solar Park that will generate 200 megawatts of clean energy was inaugurated in Dubai on Sunday.
The $326 million (300 million euro) second phase was built by a consortium including Saudi Arabia's ACWA Power and Spain's TSK. The 200 megawatt plant sprawls over 4.5 square kilometres (1.73 square miles) of desert and includes some 2.3 million photovoltaic panels.
"The UAE's strategies and investments are clear evidences that it is today leading worldwide efforts in clean and renewable energy".
HE Saeed Mohammed Al Tayer, MD & CEO of DEWA, said: "Our success in completing this phase of the Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum Solar Park, which will generate 200MW of clean energy ahead of schedule, is a direct result of the unlimited support of His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai".
The UAE has launched world-class projects to diversify energy resources with a focus on solar energy due to the convenient location of the UAE on the Sunbelt. He is also the chairman of DXB Entertainments (the listed company behind Dubai Parks and Resorts). This is in line with the directives of H.H. Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Crown Prince of Dubai and HBMSU President, who said, 'In Dubai we have already achieved the development stage and we are determined to remain first 10 years from now.' In this light, we forged a solid partnership with Holistic, a leader in the development of new perceptions of innovation and education, to develop and implement future models based on holistic disruptive innovation. After completion, the solar park will reduce 6.5 million tonnes of carbon emissions annually. DEWA set another world record with the lowest recorded bid being $US 2.99 cents per kW/h for the 800MW third phase of the solar park.
The UAE Energy Strategy 2050 aims to develop an energy mix that combines renewable, nuclear and clean energy sources to balance economic requirements and environmental goals.
