President Mamnoon Hussain Sunday signed "The Hindu Marriage Bill 2017" into law, providing for the regulation of Hindu marriages in the country. According to Pakistan Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif, the new law was passed to provide equal protection to Pakistan's Hindus.

The Pakistan Hindu Council, in connection with the Holi celebrations, is organising the 9th annual combined marriage programme at the YMCA Ground opposite the Governor House at 5:30pm today.

Responding to the development, the Pakistani Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif said that the minorities of Pakistan deserved this law as the citizen.

The law empowers the government to appoint marriage registrars in areas convenient for the Hindu population for registration of their marriages.

Marriages solemnised before the law comes into effect will be retroactively validated, but family courts would need to be petitioned for the relevant registration and documentation. The law states that offenders could be fined Rs. 1,00,000 along with imprisonment for not abiding the law. Sindh had introduced its own version of the Hindu marriage law earlier. The law will be applicable in the provinces of Punjab, Balochistan and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. All offences under this law would be non-cognizable and non-compoundable and would be triable by Court of First Class Magistrate.

Terming the recently-passed Hindu Marriage Act by the parliament a remarkable achievement, he hoped that such combined marriage ceremonies would also play pivotal role for projecting the positive image of Pakistan on global level. The document has columns for particulars of the bridegroom - his name and father's name, date of birth, date and place where the marriage is solemnized and temporary address. It also contains the matrimonial status - single, married, divorced, widower and number of dependents.
