7 things to know about former Fox News host Bill O'Reilly

21 April 2017, 03:04 | Pamela Mathis

The move comes after Fox's parent company 21 Century Fox announced O'Reilly's departure in the wake of as many as six sexual harassment claims against the 67-year-old host.

"After a thorough and careful review of the allegations, the Company and Bill O'Reilly have agreed that Bill O'Reilly will not be returning to the Fox News Channel", 21st Century Fox released in a statement.

O'Reilly has lost his job following reports that five women had been paid millions of dollars to keep quiet about harassment allegations.

Fox News media analyst Howard Kurtz then recounted the day's news and said that some women at the company had felt uncomfortable with O'Reilly's continued presence.

O'Reilly, who has worked for Fox News for 21 years, has denied the harassment claims have merit, and his attorney denounced the accusations as a "brutal campaign of character assassination".

Fox News is trying to ride out a scandal that erupted last summer, when the network's former reporter and talk show host Gretchen Carlson filed a sexual harassment suit against then-news director Roger Ailes, who ended up resigning last July.

In a memo to the staff today, Rupert, James and Lachlan Murdoch, who run Fox News, described Bill this way: 'By ratings standards, Bill O'Reilly is one of the most accomplished TV personalities in the history of cable news.

O'Reilly's public statement on Wednesday gave no indication about what he might do next.

By that time, the news had already generated considerable coverage on Fox's primary cable news competitors, CNN and MSNBC.

Others figure that O'Reilly's firing won't be a sticking point for most Fox viewers. During his vacation, his show was hosted by a rotating cast of substitutes, including Dana Perino, former spokeswoman for Republican president George W. Bush.

As Fox News scrambles to retain an image of "respect" and "truth", it is clear that O'Reilly's replacement in the form of Carlson will have to be much more than just a simple rescheduling of time slots and on-air content.

"What Rush Limbaugh was to talk radio, Bill O'Reilly has been to conservative television", said Mark Feldstein, communication professor at the University of Maryland.

"And I was told basically, "Well, you know, Bill". The books in his "Killing" historical series, including "Killing Lincoln" and "Killing Reagan", have consistently sold 1 million or more copies in hardcover, a rare achievement in publishing, and his platform on Fox enabled him to promote his work.

His book publishing partner, Henry Holt, said Wednesday that "our plans have not changed".
