The new series will find Carmen Sandiego traveling around the world and pulling off a string of global (and yes, educational) heists.

There will still be a learning component, of course - Carmen Sandiego will be produced by global learning company Houghton Mifflin Harcourt.

Netflix has formally announced plans to reboot Carmen Sandiego with Gina Rodrigues as the voice of the titular character.

Rodriguez gushed about the news in a series of tweets Tuesday. The new Carmen Sandiego series will delve into Carmen's past, exploring her origins as she continues her worldwide capers. Finn Wolfhard, best known for playing Mike in the Netflix original series Stranger Things, is also starring in Netflix's Carmen Sandiego as Player, Carmen's associate, according to the report.

Rodriguez confirmed her role in the series Friday after word of the project broke.

The franchise first began in 1985 with the release of the computer game "Where in the World Is Carmen Sandiego". The game was wildly popular, selling over four million copies by 1995.

In 1994, Fox aired the animated series, Where on Earth is Carmen Sandiego? The fresh take is set to present an intimate look into Carmen's past to follow her escapades and also answer who in the world Carmen Sandiego is and why she became a super thief. The live-action and faceless kid sitting at the computer at the beginning and ending of each episode, remember?

The new Netflix Carmen Sandiego series is planned to debut in 2019.
