Kassian scores in 3rd, Oilers beat Sharks 1-0 in Game 3

Edmonton's Zack Kassian hits San Jose's Logan Couture during the second period of Game 2 of the NHL playoffs series at Rogers Place in Edmonton on Friday

Nothing went right for the Oilers Tuesday night.

As bad as things were for the Oilers in the first period, the second was far worse. They've been very fortunate to have Cam Talbot turn aside almost everything, and they'll need to help him out by getting a couple goals of their own.

The San Jose Sharks will look to even their series with the Edmonton Oilers in game 4 of their National Hockey League playoff series.

The Sharks preached patience after they were held scoreless in games two and three, saying that if they continued to play well on defense and capitalize on their scoring opportunities, they could get right back in the series.

However, Oiler mistakes trumped skill and penalties trumped play making in game four of this first-round playoff series. All of his points came with the Sharks on the power play, which came alive after going 1 for 14 through the first three games of the series and finally made the Oilers pay for repeated trips to the penalty box. Hundreds of Oilers fans are in California, and in Sunday's 1-0 Game 3 victory, Zack Kassian's game-winning goal and Cam Talbot's second series shutout had all of them cheering long after the game was done. He hadn't scored any game-winners since March 9, 2015, while with the Vancouver Canucks.

"Their big boys stepped up and had a game like they did tonight", said Milan Lucic. "I think he came out and had a great game for us for not playing in a while".

Now we get the next narrative wrinkle: how the NHL's budding superstar and Edmonton's other fresh faces react to this resounding rout. So expect more of the same in Game 5. "We came in, got home-ice advantage back, but it'd be nice to come in and play another game like that on Tuesday".

Logan Couture was back in the Sharks' lineup for the series opener after missing the final seven regular-season games with a facial injury and Joe Thornton returned for Game 3 after sitting out a total of five contests with a knee ailment, but neither has recorded a point in the matchup. "Just keep to our fundamentals and we'd be fine, and you saw that tonight".

The Sharks needed only 15 seconds to get on the board for the first time since Melker Karlsson's overtime victor in Game 1 when Pavelski deflected a shot by defenceman Justin Braun past Talbot.

Luckily this team has a veteran coach who can give Edmonton players what the need - a short memory. You gotta score the goals. He was on pace to eclipse his season average ice time of 18:04 through two periods, but head coach Pete DeBoer cut his minutes once the game got out of hand in the third. He has only faced 39 shots over these last two games. Pavelski added another, while Logan Couture scored twice and Patrick Marleau, Marcus Sorensen and David Schlemko also found the net in the Sharks' most convincing playoff win in franchise history. Joe Thornton, as he usually does, took skate before everyone else.

Henrik Lundqvist made 23 saves and Rick Nash scored the deciding goal in the second period, as the New York Rangers defeated Montreal Canadiens 2-1 in Game 4 of their first-round series.
