Badi Ftaiti, a Tunisian-born mason who has spent three decades in Paris, said the attack that officials say left one police officer dead and another wounded didn't panic him. The shooter, whose identity is still unknown, has reportedly been shot dead.

The Islamic State claims responsibility for the attack, its news agency Amaq said.

A massive police presence remained at the Champs Elysees long after the attacks.

The incident on the central Parisian boulevard of Champs Elysees, was "probably" a terror attack, they said. "He shot straight at the police officer".

Are you a New Zealander in Paris who witnessed the incident?

"I think this election is sufficiently unstable that it could still move things", he said.

France's interior ministry said the gunman was killed after opening fire on the officers at around 9:00 pm (1900 GMT) on the boulevard.

"The policeman fell down".

Paris police spokeswoman Johanna Primevert told The Associated Press that the attacker targeted police guarding the area near the Franklin Roosevelt subway station Thursday night at the center of the avenue popular with tourists.

CNN's Paris bureau is witnessing a large police operation in the area and video showed a large number of security vehicles on the normally crowded avenue.

Authorities are now searching the home of the gunman in the east of Paris.

Although an anti-terror probe has been opened, other reports said the shooting could have been an attempt at an armed robbery.

France's president Francois Hollande said he was convinced the circumstances surrounding the attack on the police officers pointed to a terrorist act and has convened a National Defence and Security Council to meet on Friday morning.

He said: "First of all, our condolences from our country to the people of France". Again, it is happening, it seems.

On Tuesday, French authorities arrested two men in the southern city of Marseille for planning an attack during the presidential race, underscoring the fear of terrorism that has been an issue throughout the campaign.

He calls the attack a "terrible thing" and says "it never ends".

"We had to hide our customers in the basement", Choukri Chouanine, manager of a restaurant near the site of the shooting, told AFP, saying there was "lots of gunfire".
