The election will be held on June 8, almost a year after 52 percent of Britons voted to leave the European Union (EU).

But Tory Totnes MP Sarah Wollaston hit out at the plans, which she said are, "anti-democratic".

Corbyn, battling to control a party divided by his left-wing agenda and win support from a public which is unsure of his political views and leadership ability, will seek to tap voters' frustration at the political establishment.

His speech was the first in Labour's election campaign, which started today.

He spoke in defence of ordinary people who he said spent their lives working hard and in the end were left with nearly nothing.

"Theresa May hasn't called this election because she thinks she is going to lose".

She said the Greens will scrap tuition fees and restore the principle of free education.

The vote would be a battle of "the Conservatives, the party of privilege and the richest, versus the Labour Party, the party that is standing up for working people to improve the lives of all", he said. How could that not help but change her mind?

Her motive is clear.

"I want a Labour government that ensures that people don't wait for hours in A&E departments to get treatment".

The issue presents problems for Labour.

Under the terms of the Fixed-Term Parliaments Act, Mrs May must secure a two-thirds majority of MPs to bring the election forward by three years from the scheduled date of May 2020. The SNP MPs abstained in the vote.

The former Medway Labour MP Bob Marshall-Andrews has defected to the Lib Dems in a blow to his former party.

Ms May said the election was about "leadership and stability" ahead of the Brexit talks. Even some nationalists are suffering from voter fatigue after the 2014 referendum, the 2015 general election, the 2016 European Union referendum and now council elections in May and another general election in June.

Downing Street is considering proposals from broadcasters, including Sky News, which could see the Prime Minister being interviewed in front of a live studio audience. This is despite broadcasters saying they will have the debate without the Prime Minister. He said that they should be "worried about a Labour government".

"A month ago, she told her official spokesman to rule out an early general election, and that wasn't true.was it", Cooper jibed.

He plugged the line constantly because it meshed with the "nice bloke but no leader" nonsense touted by Jeremy Corbyn's critics on the Labour benches after he had trounced the best they could throw up against them.

Ms Dugdale said the election was about who governs the United Kingdom. His impassioned speech, the first formal one of the electoral campaign, highlighted the huge ideological divide at the heart of the surprise snap election due to take place on June 8.

Because the Conservatives, drunk on a failed ideology, are hell bent on cutting every public service they get their hands on, and they will use all of the divide-and-rule tricks of the Lynton Crosby trade to keep their rigged system intact.

"Scottish Labour will be putting forward a positive vision for a fairer United Kingdom that rejects both the Tories' plans for a hard Brexit and the SNP's plans for a divisive second independence referendum".
