National Football League star crashes Sean Spicer's White House press briefing

21 April 2017, 02:45 | Pamela Mathis

The Super Bowl-champion New England Patriots are visiting the White House to accept congratulations from President Donald Trump for another National Football League title.

Thirty-four Patriots players reportedly visited Washington D.C. on Wednesday afternoon to celebrate their improbable Super Bowl comeback victory over the Falcons in overtime.

Maybe this is a slight, or maybe Trump just forgot about Brady's record breaking 466 passing yards and 43 completions that lead the Patriots to their fifth Super Bowl victory.

However, on Wednesday night, the Patriots responded to the tweet, saying the side-by-side photos "lack context".

Trump has particularly close ties to the Patriots, counting owner Bob Kraft and head coach Bill Belichick as friends.

Even Tom Brady, the captain and star player who supported Trump through the campaign, didn't show up to the big day - which must've been a big blow to the big guy's ego.

"In light of some recent developments, I am unable to attend today's ceremony, as I am attending to some personal family matters", Brady said in a statement provided to ESPN.

Whoever was managing New England's Twitter account hours after the event apparently took offense to the Times' suggestive comparison.

Elsewhere at the White House, the Patriots' Rob Gronkowski interrupted press secretary Sean Spicer's daily briefing with reporters, opening a door behind the spokesman to ask amid laughter: "You need some help?"

WFAN's Evan Roberts said: "I really do think that meeting the president to Tom Brady is not that exciting.

You pulled off the greatest Super Bowl comeback of all time", Trump said.

"Alright, that was cool", Spicer said.

Patriots head coach Bill Belichick and team owner Robert Kraft, whose personal relationships with President Trump has been heavily reported on over the previous year, were front and center as the President honored the Super Bowl LI Champs.

Patriots players did not speak about Hernandez's death at the White House and team officials earlier said they would not comment.

A tweet and a story from the New York Times strongly suggested that the number was far less this year than when the Patriots visited President Barack Obama in 2015.

Also not addressed in the ceremony was the morning news of former Patriots player Aaron Hernandez's suicide.

The 27-year-old Hernandez was serving a life sentence for the 2013 shooting death of a friend.

Devin McCourty told Time Magazine, "Basic reason for me is I don't feel accepted in the White House".
