Anne Frank Center director: Trump should fire Spicer for Hitler remark

White House press secretary Sean Spicer apologizes for comments he made suggesting that President Bashar al Assad of Syria was worse than Hitler during a TV interview at the White House

White House press secretary Sean Spicer, in an effort to shame Russia's alliance with Syrian President Bashar al-Assad and his use of chemical weapons, said Tuesday Adolf Hitler "didn't even sink to using chemical weapons" during World War II.

"Let me explain why we can't accept his apology - it took him three apology attempts to finally sort of get it right", Goldstein said. Eighty-seven people, including children, were killed in last week's chemical weapons attack in Syria. The comment drew an instant rebuke from critics, who noted the remark ignored Hitler's use of gas chambers to exterminate Jews during the Holocaust. "He brought them into the Holocaust center, I understand that".

"Sean Spicer must be fired, and the president must immediately disavow his spokesman's statements", top congressional Democrat Nancy Pelosi said.

Parallels have been drawn between the comments made by Mr Spicer on Tuesday and those expressed on Fox Business on Monday.

Amid a drumbeat of criticism, Spicer appeared on CNN's "The Situation Room with Wolf Blitzer" Tuesday evening and profusely apologized.

A day later he defended his attacks against the media, telling reporters: "I think sometimes you can disagree with facts".

United States says Iran could become another North Korea if left 'unchecked'
But Mr Obama kept those issues separate from the nuclear agreement, which would have been impossible to achieve without that narrow focus.

Despite the apologies, Mr Spicer's remarks provoked outrage around the globe from those who claimed he showed insensitivity to victims of the Holocaust.

Spicer shared that he had not spoken to Trump this morning, but would not comment on any possible private conversations he had with the president or other White House officials on the matter.

"Your job as the spokesperson is to help amplify the president's actions and accomplishments", Spicer said.

The New York-based Anne Frank Center for Mutual Respect also called on Trump to fire Spicer, saying he denied that Hitler gassed Jews during the Holocaust.

The White House generated criticism at the start of the year when a statement on worldwide Holocaust Remembrance Day did not make any reference to Jews.

A White House spokesman said later that "nothing has changed in our posture" and the president retains the option to act if it's in the national interest.
