Paris shooting: French police officer killed, attacker 'taken down'

21 April 2017, 03:17 | Darnell Patrick

Shots were heard in or near the Marks & Spencer store, provoking a panicked rush away from the scene by tourists and passers-by. The Islamic State group quickly claimed responsibility for the attack.

The ministry said one police officer was killed.

A vehicle pulled up alongside a police bus just before 21:00 (19:00 GMT) and a man got out, opening fire with an automatic weapon at the bus, Mr Brandet said. French news sources are also reporting the attacker had posted a threat against police on a smartphone messaging site popular with jihadists.

French anti-terror prosecutors and the National Intelligence Service are opening an investigation to determine the nature of the incident, the Paris Prosecutor's Office said in a text to CNN.

Shortly after the deadly attack, French President Francois Hollande said security forces will be exercising the utmost vigilance, especially given the imminence of the country's presidential election process.

"We're three days before a presidential election", Eleanor says.

"What can you say? It just never ends", Trump added.

It will also be the Brexit election, meant to consolidate the decision taken at the referendum and ensure there is no backsliding. MPs, the PM said, have a window of opportunity to hold a general election before negotiations with the European Union begin.

A massive police presence remained at the Champs Elysees long after the attacks. The Tour de France ends at this location.

A French television station hosting a televised event with the 11 candidates running for president briefly interrupted its broadcast to report the shootings.

Centrist candidate Emmanuel Macron offered his thoughts to the family of the dead officer and Socialist Benoit Hamon tweeted his "full support" to police against terrorism.

If no candidate claims a majority in the first round - which is likely - there will be a run-off election between the top two candidates on May 7.

IS's Amaq news agency identified the attacker as one of its soldiers naming him as Abu Yousif, a Belgian.

Security has been especially high since Tuesday, when police said they thwarted a terror attack by arresting two men.

An attacker took a truck and drove down a crowded street in Nice during a Bastille Day celebration, killing 84.

Former French President Nicola Sarkozy's tweeted: "To our law enforcement: support, strength, courage".
