Patriots respond to comparison photo showing team with Obama versus Trump

President Donald Trump slammed the New York Times Thursday for posting images contrasting the New England Patriots' 2015 and 2017 White House Super Bowl celebrations. The first was taken during the Patriots' visit with President Barack Obama in 2015, with the second being the Patriots' visit with President Trump on Wednesday. I made a decision in about four minutes that clearly warranted much more time. That is still down considerably from the estimated 50 players who visited Obama in 2015, but that too can be explained, at least in part, by the timing of the Super Bowl (cont. below).

There is some speculation that Tom Brady bailed on the White House visit - perhaps prompted by wife and Trump foe Giselle Bundchen - because he wants to avoid any backlash in celebrity circles where President Trump is very unpopular, even though the president regularly mixed with celebrities during his long, pre-politics career in the media spotlight.

The New England Patriots celebrated their Super Bowl LI victory by visiting the White House on Wednesday. In the case of the picture taken during the visit with President Obama, the Patriots tweeted, more than 40 staff members are seen on the stairs. "In 2017, they were seated on the South Lawn".

During his campaign Trump mentioned the fact that he and Brady are friends every time he passed through New England, and on numerous occasions he's called Brady the greatest quarterback who's ever lived. The franchise has nine Super Bowl appearances.

The New York Times obtained a reaction from a Patriots' rep about the matter of size. "James said, however, that the size of the Patriots' full delegation for each trip to the White House has been roughly the same".

The Patriots organization, however, says that the photos are misleading.

The Times tweeted an update saying the Pats confirmed that fewer players attended this year, but that the total delegation was about the same.

That's when George W. Bush was president.
