Pence Praises Freedom, Religious Diversity in Indonesia

21 April 2017, 03:01 | Darnell Patrick

Indonesia is on Trump's trade hit list of nations that he considers the U.S.is losing out to in trade, and US company Freeport-McMoran Inc., which operates the world's largest copper mine in the Indonesian province of Papua, is in a protracted dispute with the Indonesian government.

Pence had struck a more conciliatory tone at a press conference with the Japanese Deputy Prime Minister Taro Aso in Tokyo Tuesday.

Pence on Wednesday also restated the USA commitment to a peaceful resolution to the DPRK's missile and nuclear programs but intimated that it would be no pushover. U.S. Vice President Mike Pence, left, is shown the way by Indonesian President Joko Widodo during their meeting at Merdeka Palace in Jakarta, Indonesia, Thursday, April 20, 2017. But the South Korean people are choosing a new president next month and there's a high likelihood the incoming government in Seoul will seek engagement and diplomacy with Pyongyang that would run counter to the strategy Pence is articulating.

Pence said at a joint news conference with Jokowi that the USA wants to strengthen its strategic partnership with Indonesia.

Pence signed baseballs for players and was presented with two jerseys at Wednesday's gathering with dozens of young ballplayers.

US Vice President Mike Pence said on Wednesday that Washington would work with its allies and China to put economic and diplomatic pressure on North Korea but added that America would defeat any attack with an "overwhelming response".

Pence is speaking in Tokyo to the U.S. Chamber of Commerce in Japan. He says the Trump administration's plans to simplify the USA tax code and cut the corporate tax rate will "benefit every business represented here today".

He said Japan had explained to the US the importance of the TPP in both strategic and economic terms, and he believed the USA understood that stance.

South Korea's conservative candidate for its May presidential election, Hong Joon-pyo, told The Wall Street Journal of the carrier mix-up: "What Mr. Trump said was very important for the national security of South Korea".

"But at the same time", the prime minister said, "dialogue for the sake of dialogue is valueless and it is necessary for us to exercise pressure on North Korea so that it comes forward and engages in this serious dialogue".

"As President Trump has made clear, the era of strategic patience is over", the vice president said.

"Beyond the noble ship and the carrier strike group that it leads, by the year 2020, this ocean will boast 60 percent of our Navy's fleet".

From the wind-swept deck of a massive aircraft carrier, Vice President Mike Pence on Wednesday warned North Korea not to test the resolve of the USA military, promising that it would make an "overwhelming and effective" response to any use of conventional or nuclear weapons.

He also said the United States will honor its alliance with Pacific Rim nations to protect freedom of navigation in the disputed South China Sea - most of which Beijing lays claim to, despite conflicting claims from other Asian nations.

Since Donald Trump took office, North Korea has launched at least eight ballistic missiles, and there is evidence that the North is preparing for a sixth nuclear test.
