Prosecution rests case in fatal Pa. trooper ambush

Frein was accused of hiding in a forest in September of 2014 and opening fire with a sniper's rifle in an ambush on State Police barracks.

Frein also is charged with the attempted murder of Trooper Alex Douglass, 34, who was wounded as he attempted to help Dickson, and terrorism.

Almost 1,000 members of law enforcement participated in the six-week manhunt in the northeastern Pennsylvania woods before US marshals captured Frein outside an abandoned airplane hangar. "We can't make him a holy man, but we're trying to make him a man". A warning label inside the vest said it's not meant to protect against rifle fire.A pathologist who conducted the autopsy on Dickson told the jury that either of the bullets that struck him would have been fatal.Frein eluded capture for almost seven weeks before USA marshals found him outside an abandoned airplane hangar more than 20 miles from the shooting scene. The defense offered no evidence or testimony and conceded the government's overwhelming case for conviction.

Prosecutors are seeking the death penalty for Frein, who was convicted of killing Cpl.

"We think that Eric deserves to live", said Frein's attorney Bill Ruzzo. Pennsylvania last used the death penalty in 1999.

"I certainly acknowledge that that mountain of evidence you heard and you saw points to my client, Eric Frein", defense lawyer Michael Weinstein said in a brief closing argument in which he thanked the jurors for their attentiveness.
