Sarin or similar used in Idlib: watchdog

21 April 2017, 02:59 | Darnell Patrick

France's Foreign Minister Jean-Marc Ayrault said Wednesday that this country would present proof of the Assad regime's culpability in the coming days.

The move came as OPCW head Ahmet Uzumcu said Wednesday that "incontrovertible" OPCW test results had shown sarin gas or a similar substance were used in the attack. The assessment was confirmed by two other defense officials, AP said.

After the USA strike, Russian Federation said it would suspend its participation in a hotline with the United States military to "deconflict" or minimize the risk of mid-air collisions in Syrian airspace, but US officials said this week that the two militaries continued to communicate.

But Moscow, the closest ally of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad, is leading efforts to sideline the OPCW's existing fact-finding mission by calling for a new "full-scale and thorough investigation".

Using chemical weapons earlier this month in the town of Khan Sheikhoun, in Syria's northern Idlib province, was a "strategic" decision geared towards discouraging the rebels.

North Korea says don't mess with us as USA plans next move
Trump is clearly on the mind of the North Korean leadership. "It is worthless to respond to this kind of story", he added. He said the country should have been dealt with by President Obama and "previous presidents all the way back to Clinton".

The missile strike was the first direct United States military action against Assad's forces since the start of Syria's civil war six years ago and precipitated a downward spiral in ties between Washington and Moscow. It was the first time United States forces had directly attacked government forces in the six-year civil war.

"If ISIS had manufactured these weapons, I'm sure we would have seen them used by now, with half of Mosul gone", he said.

President Donald Trump was never going to be involved in Syria's war, but 72 hours after Assad's chemical strike on his own people, Trump was dispatching 60 tomahawk missiles onto one of Syria's six military airfields. Iran and Hezbollah, both bitter enemies of Israel, along with Russian Federation have sent forces to support Assad. The OPCW was in 2013 responsible for overseeing the destruction of Syria's chemical weapon stockpile, following an attack in the Ghouta area of Damascus that activists say killed 1,400 people. However, doubts soon emerged over whether all of the regime's armaments or production facilities were declared and destroyed.

The attack in the northwestern town of Khan Sheikhoun woke hundreds of civilians in the early hours of April 4.

"One ton of sarin could easily be used to perpetrate an attack on the scale of the 2013 attack", Kaszeta said.
