Trump to meet Italian premier ahead of G-7 meeting in Italy

Trump says strong Europe is important for US

US President Donald Trump said in a joint press conference with Italian Prime Minister Paolo Gentiloni on Thursday that he does not see a role for the United States to play in Libya.

Italy is also a member of North Atlantic Treaty Organisation, the military alliance to which Trump says the USA contributes more than it receives.

Trump, speaking at a joint news conference with Gentiloni after their first in-person meeting, recognized Italy's military contributions to the fight against ISIS and the war in Afghanistan and said the two countries could partner to address "large-scale migration and global smuggling".

Trump plans to attend a North Atlantic Treaty Organisation meeting in Belgium next month before the Group of Seven gathering in Italy.

Trump spoke during a news conference with Italian Prime Minister Paolo Gentiloni.

Trump has pulled the United States out of the Trans-Pacific Partnership, a pact he said was "a disaster".

"I do not see a role in Libya", Trump said.

While he has yet to travel overseas as president, Mr. Trump in his first 100 days in office has met with multiple top foreign leaders, including British Prime Minister Theresa May, Egyptian President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi, Chinese President Xi Jinping, Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and Mexican President Peña Nieto.

The president insists he had only been negotiating for a short time and says the new plan "gets better and better". The first plan faced opposition from both conservative and moderate Republicans and was never voted upon in Congress.

President Donald Trump says Iran is not living up to the "spirit" of the nuclear agreement.

And, with a funding deadline looming to keep the government running, Trump said it was possible Congress would manage to accomplish it all next week or "shortly thereafter". Trump has criticized the Obama administration for a 2011 military intervention that he says created a power vacuum that led Libya to slip into chaos. "It shouldn't have been signed".

The two leaders also took to their podiums as reports surfaced of an attack that killed one police officer and wounded another in Paris.

It was unclear how Trump concluded that terrorism may have been a factor. While disparaging the nuclear deal and accusing Iran of fomenting violence and terrorism throughout the Middle East, Trump has avoided committing to abandoning the agreement, a move that would be staunchly opposed by US businesses and European allies.

The attack came three days before the first round of balloting in France's presidential election.
