Turkish PM says rumours of foul play an effort to undermine referendum result

Turkish President declares victory

He also stated that the European Union had been violating its commitments for 54 years.

Some felt Mr Trump's call had more to do with the Trump Organisation's business ties to Turkey rather than a preference for brash leaders.

ANKARA, Turkey (AP) - Turkey's prime minister on Tuesday called on the opposition to respect the result of a referendum that will give sweeping new powers to the office of the president.

"The way President Trump is approaching matters is encouraging, makes us happy", Erdogan told CNN International in an exclusive interview. The main opposition party has launched an appeal to invalidate the result.

"Erdogan probably thought it was time to move forward [with his plan for an executive presidential system] due to the inspiration he took from the spirit of national unity that emerged after the bloody coup attempt", Editor-in-Chief Murat Yetkin wrote in the Hurriyet Daily News.

Global monitors said the move undermined safeguards against fraud. The OSCE concluded that the referendum did not meet the standards of the Council of Europe. The monitors also criticised a late change by electoral officials that allowed voting papers without official stamps to be counted. The Turkish Bar Association described the move as "illegal". She offered no evidence.

At least 1 dead in Venezuelan protests
Then, on March 29, the Venezuelan Supreme Court dissolved the Parliament, transferring all legislative powers to itself. A teenager died in the capital Caracas and a woman was killed in San Cristobal, near the Colombian border.

He said that Turkey did not "see, hear or acknowledge" the observer mission's reports and accused some European countries of showing more opposition to the constitutional changes than Turkey's own opposition parties. He said the results of the referendum on constitutional changes are "illegitimate" and the party would use all legal paths to challenge it. The assessment drew a harsh rebuke from Erdogan and criticism from Prime Minister Binali Yildirim.

"On the death penalty.not only is this a red line, but the reddest of all red lines", Commission spokesman Schinas said. In return, the bloc pledged to accelerate the Turkish EU accession bid and introduce a visa-free regime, as well as provide financial aid to Turkey to cover the costs of migrant reception.

"Under the conditions of the emergency and despite the pressures, our country came out and took control of the future", said CHP leader Kilicdaroglu.

According to Turkish officials, the leaders also discussed the situation in Syria, with Trump commending Turkey's support of recent US military strikes against the regime of dictator Bashir al-Assad.

Ms. Schinas said, "We ... call on all actors to show restraint and on the authorities to launch transparent investigations into these alleged irregularities found by the observers". Other European leaders have expressed concern about the possibility of the return of capital punishment. Among others, Turkish Foreign Minister Mevlüt Çavuşoğlu has made comments to this effect.

As someone who was also involved in another historic referendum recently, the Brexit referendum that saw Britain vote - again by a hair - to leave the European Union, the divided and polarised reactions to Turkey's referendum result are familiar to me.
