Labour MPs call on London mayor to help with general election campaign

22 April 2017, 12:59 | Darnell Patrick

British Labour Party leader Jeremy Corbyn has pledged to run a campaign for "working people" in an election that pitted "the Establishment" against the "people".

"Those are the people who are monopolising the wealth that should be shared by each and every one of us in this country", he said.

Corbyn has insisted that the result of the election is not a foregone conclusion and has vowed to not "play by the rules" if his party was to win the majority on June 8.

He added: "Of course we are not complacent about the situation in England".

"They think there are rules in politics, which if you don't follow by doffing your cap to powerful people, accepting that things can't really change, then you can't win".

Corby, on Thursday also said that Labour was the only party that would "focus on the kind of country we want to have after Brexit" - dismissing May's election campaign as an "ego trip about her own failing leadership", reports the BBC.

He spoke in defence of ordinary people who he said spent their lives working hard and in the end were left with nearly nothing. "The British people know they are held back...by a system rigged for the wealth extractors", he said.

However Mr Corbyn said last night there was no chance of any agreement being reached and blasted the SNP as having "no interest" in making the United Kingdom better for working people.

Conservative leader May sprang a major surprise on Tuesday by calling a June 8 election, three years ahead of schedule, to capitalise on a dramatic collapse in support for Labour and win a stronger mandate to boost her in complex divorce talks with the European Union. The nurse, the teacher, the small trader, the carer, the builder, the office worker win.

It comes after shadow chancellor John McDonnell on Wednesday said the Government should "put the deal to Parliament and possibly to the country overall" and Mr Corbyn dodged a question on the issue in his first keynote speech of the campaign.

Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn has ruled out any chance of a "progressive alliance" with the SNP in a bid to lock the Tories out of power at Westminster.

"It is these rules that have allowed a cosy cartel to rig the system in favour of a few powerful and wealthy individuals and corporations", Corbyn said.

"It is a rigged system set up by the wealth extractors, for the wealth extractors".

Labour, she explained, was "prepared to make radical change" and stand up to the elites but stressed that this did not mean "picking off people of particular incomes".

But Corbyn said today: "Seven years of Tory failure and broken promises have left our schools in a bad state".

"SNP councillors will always put their local communities first - they are not there to simply make up the numbers and be used as a proxy war in national political games".
