Tottenham under-23 coach Ugo Ehiogu dies at 44

Ehiogu collapsed at Spurs training ground in Enfield at 11:30am on April 20, where he received immediate medical treatment before being transferred to the hospital.

Tottenham, in a statement on Friday, said, "We can confirm that Ugo Ehiogu is now in hospital after collapsing at our Training Centre earlier today".

Southgate had a close bond with Ehiogu, having shared defensive duties with him at Aston Villa, Middlesbrough and England and the pair won two League Cups together in 1996 and 2004.

The former defender also had spells with Leeds United, Rangers and Sheffield United before retiring in 2009.

The 44-year-old suffered a sudden heart attack.

Not only have United faced Ehiogu in a coaching capacity but he also played against the Reds in the top flight for Aston Villa and Middlesbrough.

Unfortunately, I was too young to remember Ugo's time at Villa, but it came at a good time.

Tottenham announced the news of his death this morning, issuing a statement: "It is with huge sadness that we announce the passing of Ugo Ehiogu, our Under-23 coach". "All of Middlesbrough Football Club will miss him". Thoughts with his family and friends.

John McDermott, Tottenham's head of coaching and player development, described Ehiogu as "irreplaceable".

Merson played alongside Ehiogu at Aston Villa between 1998 and 2000 and appeared on Sky Sports News following confirmation of Ehiogu's tragic death, despite being visibly distraught.

"I watched him play many times and was a great admirer of him as a footballer".

Villa, for whom Ehiogu played more than 300 games, tweeted: "We are deeply saddened to hear of the death of our former defender Ugo Ehiogu".

Former Villa winger Tony Daley added on Twitter: "Ugo, may you rest in peace, memories of you will live on forever".

Ehiogu moved into coaching and started working part-time with the Tottenham youth teams before he was appointed coach of the Under-21 team in 2014. "Our thoughts are with his family at this terribly sad time".

Villa will hold a minute's applause before their second-tier League Championship match against Birmingham on Sunday, with both sets of players to wear black armbands.

His former clubs have also sent their condolences.
