Android developers can now block rooted devices, Netflix bites

19 May 2017, 11:48 | Ross Houston

GE Appliances announced a deal with Google enabling the U.S. tech giant's voice control home hub to be used for cooking, cleaning and other functions.

Android O and 2 Billion users is big news, but the real story from I/O 2017 is how everything will become a vessel for Google Assistant and the artificial intelligence that powers it.

The announcement comes almost a year after GE Appliances unveiled a similar tie-up with Amazon's Alexa-powered speakers.

Google Assistant, introduced past year, is now on more than 100 million devices, according to the team's vice president of engineering, Scott Huffman. Again, this concept integrates the Google Lens technology for image identification and intelligently connecting up.

Yesterday we posted a report titled "Google Assistant is now Available for iOS and Google Home will be Offering Free Phone Calls within the USA and Canada".

The crowd of developers in the audience cheered: millions of new iPhone users to reach for innovative voice-based interactions. Google has said that it will continue rolling out Instant Apps to more and more countries, though exact dates and countries was not listed.

"We are now witnessing a new shift in computing: the move from a mobile-first to an AI-first world", Google chief executive Sundar Pichai said during an opening presentation. What's more, Google also said that it wants to release Android Go counterparts to coincide with all mainline Android versions in the future.

So Google is adding keyboard input support to Assistant, and camera support will also come soon, the company announced at its developer conference (now under way).

Some 100 million Android devices now have Assistant on them. It also is launching an attempt to make its voice-controlled digital assistant more proactive and visual while expanding its audience to Apple's iPhone, where it will try to outwit an older peer, Siri.

More information is expected in the coming days on Google's plans for wearables with Android Wear, as well as Android TV, and at the end of the three-day event there will be a live-streamed concert by LCD Soundsystem. In the most obvious app to test this, Messages, the app auto-selects an entire message bubble when you long-press on it, so it sort of short-circuits smart text selection.

If you want to make sure that you get a bite of this cake, you better start now.

The AI will also be integrated into Google's Photos App, creating a service that automatically creates and organizes albums in your cloud.

AAudio is a new native API for apps that require high-performance, low-latency audio. Pocket-lint has an in-depth guide on Google Assistant that details everything you need to know, including which devices and apps it is now found in, how it works, what it can do, and the types of functionality it offers per device.

What scant updates the company did announce were spread across two separate areas: "vitals", which cover Android's internal processes and functions, and "fluid experiences", which relates to visible features like the UI and settings.
