Mr MacGibbon declined to comment on the identity or type of the business impacted by the unprecedented cyber attack but said it was a small company, which did not provide critical infrastructure.

The state-run People's Daily compared the cyber attack to the terrorist hacking depicted in the U.S. film "Die Hard 4", warning that China's role in global trade and internet connectivity opened it to increased risks from overseas.

Over the last few days, the global ransomware attack WannaCry infected computers running on older versions of Microsoft operating systems like XP, locking access to files.

According to reports, the malicious software spread to at least 300,000 devices globally, including the UK's National Health Service (NHS).

The global ransomware plague started infecting computers on Friday, abusing an exploit discovered by the NSA that was leaked to the public by the Shadow Brokers hacker group. EternalBlue uses a backdoor referred to as DoublePulsar and those who haven't installed Microsoft's patch from March may still be vulnerable to the ransomware attack.

Mumbai:Further, the RBI has asked banks to follow the instructions of government firm Indian Computer Emergency Response Team (CERT-In) to prevent the attack by ransomware, "WannaCry", which has impacted various IT networks in over 150 countries.

"We have seen vulnerabilities stored by the Central Intelligence Agency show up on WikiLeaks and now this vulnerability stolen from the NSA has affected customers around the world". An equivalent scenario with conventional weapons would be the USA military having some of its Tomahawk missiles stolen. "They need to take a different approach and adhere in cyberspace to the same rules applied to weapons in the physical world".

The so-called "WannaCry" virus hit older versions of the software, such as Windows XP, particularly hard, and the UI suspended support for Windows XP in 2014.

Ahead of the attack, Microsoft released a security update that fixes the exploited flaw on now supported Windows operating systems. The exchanges told members that they will have to ensure that all workstations and servers have the latest Microsoft patch. "We believe the recent ransomware attack could accelerate the Windows upgrade cycle for enterprises".

"The governments of the world should treat this attack as a wake-up call", Smith wrote while also noting how "cybersecurity has become a shared responsibility between tech companies and customers".
