Justice Department Appoints Robert Mueller as Special Counsel for Russia Investigation

19 May 2017, 10:23 | Darnell Patrick

'The entire thing has been a witch hunt, ' the US President said.

Rosenstein was initially invited to attend a closed-door session to explain the president's firing of FBI Director James Comey, but the topic changed after he appointed former bureau chief Robert Mueller to start an independent investigation of suspected Russian interference in the campaign.

The Justice Department has appointed former FBI Director Robert Mueller (MUHL'-ur) as a special counsel to lead a federal investigation into allegations that Donald Trump's campaign collaborated with Russian Federation to sway the 2016 election that put him in the White House.

Mueller will have sweeping powers and the authority to prosecute any crimes he uncovers during the investigation, according to AP. "If I remember rightly, around a month-and-a-half or two months ago, the Trump administration chose to ban passengers from seven Middle Eastern countries from carrying any electronic devices on board..."

Asked if he had done anything that might merit prosecution or even impeachment, Mr Trump said "no" and then added of the lingering allegations and questions: "I think it's totally ridiculous".

In another tweet Thursday morning, he claims, "With all of the illegal acts that took place in the Clinton campaign & Obama Administration, there was never a special councel (sic) appointed!"

Comey friend: Trump repeatedly tried to compromise former Federal Bureau of Investigation director
Comey or anyone else to end any investigation, including any investigation involving General Flynn", a White House statement said. The Times reported that Comey wrote in a memo that Trump told him that "He is a good guy".

Trump also has a habit of seeing political events through a prism of his own image and how they affect his reputation. "No politician in history has been treated worse or more unfairly".

The President's comment may also conflict with a sound legal strategy, given that he could eventually be called upon to testify to Mueller's probe.

The tweets fly in the face of the statement issued on Wednesday night which had appeared as an attempt by Trump's staff to tamp down the raging political storm over Russian Federation which has resulted in Trump's worst week in office so far.

"This shuts the whole thing down", said one Republican source, speaking on Congressional efforts to investigate Comey's discussions with Trump.

Both U.S. Sen. Michael Bennet and U.S. Rep. Jared Polis, D-Boulder, said the Mueller decision - while welcome - didn't go as far as their preference of having a full commission examine the 2016 race and whether Russian involvement included contacts with the campaign of President Donald Trump. Democratic senator Tim Kaine, Hillary Clinton's 2016 running mate, referred to Mueller's appointment as a "good move", USA Today reported, and Republican congressman Jason Chaffetz said he was a "great selection".

US stocks recovered ground on Thursday as upbeat economic data emboldened investors to return to the market, a day after Wall Street saw the biggest selloff in eight months on worries the political turmoil could undermine Trump initiatives such as tax cuts that investors see as favouring economic growth.
