No New Diesel Engines In The Pipeline, Says Volvo CEO
19 May 2017, 08:59 | Megan Pierce
Hakan Samuelsson CEO of Volvo Car Group in Detroit Michigan U.S
Diesel has taken a major one-two punch in the form of the Volkswagen emissions scandal and tightening efficiency standards.
Back in March, Volvo Cars CEO Hakan Samuelsson said that the Swedish automaker is is focusing more on the development of electric cars.
Samuelsson later said in a statement emailed to Reuters he believed diesel would still play a crucial role in the next few years in helping the company meet targets to reduce emissions of carbon dioxide, being more fuel-efficient than petrol engines.
If you're a really big fan of Volvo's diesel cars, you might want to avert your eyes. According to Reuters, Samuelsson told German's Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung in an interview, "From today's perspective, we will not develop any more new- generation diesel engines". However, the costs of meeting the higher anti-pollution standards with a new engine will no longer be worth as the current generation engine will not be produced after 2023. Volvo, owned by China's Geely, sells 90 per cent of its XC 90 offroaders in Europe with diesel engines.

Afghan ISIS chief Abdul Hasib killed in raid
US Captain Jeff Davis confirmed at the time that the raid was targeting Hasib, but could not confirm whether he had been killed . That's the same area where the terror group's top local commander was killed by Afghan and USA military forces in April.
Due to their superior fuel economy, diesels can help automakers meet strict targets for carbon-dioxide emissions.
But the outlook farther ahead involves regulations that will also severely limit nitrogen oxides (NOx). US standards that focus on these emissions are what doomed Volkswagen, and now Europe is shifting its standards to emphasis NOx emissions as well.
While Europe is still very much a diesel vehicle market - diesel cars make up over 50 percent of the continent's passenger fleet - impending regulations and the growing popularity of electric cars could bring about diesel's demise earlier than expected.
