Referee Steinhaus promoted as 1st women in Bundesliga
19 May 2017, 10:56 | Austin Hogan
A 38-year-old police officer will become the first woman to referee a top-flight soccer match in Germany next season after being promoted to the Bundesliga, the country's football association (DFB) said on Friday.
And later became the first Englishman since Jack Taylor in 1974, to referee a World Cup final.
Steinhaus is one of four new refereeing appointments that were confirmed at a meeting today.
Referee Bibiana Steinhaus has been promoted to the Bundesliga for next season and will be first women working games in Germany's top division.
And she took charge of the women's gold medal match between Japan and the United States of America at the 2012 Olympic Games. It was simply a turbulent roller coaster ride of emotions.
"It is on the one hand confirmation for the hard work I've done to get here, on the other hand also great incentive to continue to work".
"It was always a dream to reach the Bundesliga, and of course it feels fantastic that this dream has come true".
When asked what she hoped to achieve, she put it plainly: "Above all else, that my performances are judged for themselves and not for my being a woman". "I'm very much looking forward to the task that awaits me", Steinhaus told BBC Sport.
Prior to becoming a referee she played for SV Bad Lauterberg.
