The rival claims to Jerusalem lie at the heart of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict and no countries now have their embassies in Jerusalem, instead basing them in Israel's commercial capital Tel Aviv.
"Israel's position has often been expressed to the American administration and to the world", the statement from the prime minister's office read.
Israel considers all of Jerusalem as its indivisible capital, a claim that is not recognised internationally, and the Western Wall - the holiest prayer site for Jews - is part of territory it captured in the 1967 Middle East war.
Trump has already promised Netanyahu that he would recognize Jerusalem al-Quds as Israel's "eternal" capital.

Worshippers at the Western Wall in the Old City of Jerusalem, Jan. 17, 2017. While Trump has articulated support for peace between the two sides, he has yet to explicitly endorse the creation of a fledgling Palestinian state, or join the global consensus supporting a two-state solution.
"We are convinced that this statement is contrary to the policy of President Trump".
Before he visits Israel, Trump is scheduled to travel to Riyadh where he will hold a summit with Arab and Islamic leaders on May 21.
