EC Dismisses AAP's EVM Tampering Demonstration
20 May 2017, 03:13 | Darnell Patrick
AAP suggested that all the political parties, technical experts and students of institutes like Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) should be called in hackathon to prove that EVMs can be hacked. On April 11, as many as 16 Opposition parties had written to the polling monitor alleging that the tampering of EVMs had created a "deep-seated trust deficit" on their reliability.
During a day-long special sitting of the Delhi assembly yesterday, AAP MLA Saurabh Bhardwaj put on a "live demonstration" of how EVMs can be programmed to favour any political party. The EC subsequently pointed out that the hacking of any device that looks like an EVM does not mean that an EVM is hackable or has been hacked.
The Election Commission today hit out at the Aam Aadmi Party, saying by hacking a "look-alike" electronic voting machine, it can not influence the electorate and vilify the EVMs used by it.
Apart from demanding that VVPAT-equipped EVMs be used, the party will also request the EC that votes registered in EVMs and paper trails of 25% randomly chosen booths be tallied, the AAP leader said. The EC is unlikely to listen to this demand. It met EC officials and handed over a letter addressed to Election Commissioner Nasim Zaidi.
Hundreds of Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) activists on Thursday protested outside the Election Commission headquarters here against alleged tampering of electronic voting machines (EVMs) during recent state polls. "Sad that EC has backed out of hackathon", tweeted Arvind Kejriwal.
Following the demonstration, AAP will present the evidence to the Election Commission to further investigate the matter.
"Ninety seconds is all it takes under the nose of your police, your bureaucracy by engineers from a company that you own to hack EVMs before elections. It is our constitutional and moral duty to stand dead centre of the circle drawn around us by 56 political parties", he added.
"We support EVM. There is a need to restore the faith of people in EVMs".
The Commission also noted it has an all-party meeting, convened to discuss EVM issues and other electoral reforms, scheduled for May 12. The EC has said that they will think about our demands in the all party meeting. The party on Tuesday had held a demonstration where it had attempted to show that EVMs could be rigged.
"In addition to the EVM/VVPAT, the agenda will also cover making bribery in elections a cognisable offence, disqualification on framing of charges for the offences of bribery in elections and suggestions in VVPAT recount Rules", it had said in a statement last week.
