"It was a pretty dark album lyrically and pretty depressing, and I was going through a really hard time in my life - my band wasn't together anymore, my marriage was falling apart and I was dealing with it by drinking way too much, and that has its own problems, particularly with depression", he told Rolling Stone in 2015. Chris Cornell, whose band Soundgarden was one of the architects of grunge music, was found dead early today in his MGM Grand hotel room in downtown Detroit. Soundgarden, who split in acrimony in 1997, reunited and Cornell released a series of solo albums as well as a theme song for the James Bond film Casino Royale.
The group formed in Seattle in the 1980s at a time when the city was far off the beaten path of the musical mainstream and there were few venues for smaller artists to play original material.
Frontman Kurt Cobain of Nirvana, who towered over the grunge scene, killed himself in 1994 and Stone Temple Pilots singer Scott Weiland died on a tour bus in 2015 from a drug overdose.
After telling the audience that he could never sing like Cornell, he asked the crowd to join in and sing with him.
The band, which had released hit songs and found success, marked a mainstream breakthrough with "Superunknown", its 1994 album that won them two Grammys, sold more than five million units in the US, and launched five hits, including "Black Hole Sun", one of the most popular alternative rock songs from the 1990s.
He closed the show with Soundgarden's song Slaves And Bulldozers but, according to footage posted by fans, inserted lyrics from Led Zeppelin's In My Time Of Dying.
