French ex-PM wants to join Macron's party

French President-elect Emmanuel Macron holds hands with his wife, Brigitte, during a victory celebration outside the Louvre museum in Paris, Sunday, May 7, 2017. For them, Macron's victory brought badly needed relief after last year's shock election results in Britain and the United States, widely seen as revolts against "establishment" candidates and institutions.

Trump was among world leaders sending congratulations to Macron, noting his "big win today as the next President of France". "I look very much forward to working with him!"

"After Brexit and Trump's victory, the Western world and Europe have been spared another political natural disaster", said German daily Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung. "I will be at the head of this combat", she said.

"This year, I wanted Emmanuel Macron to be here with me so that a torch could be passed on", said Hollande, appearing with Macron at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier at the Arc de Triomphe in Paris to commemorate Victory in Europe Day and the surrender of Nazi forces on May 8, 1945 at the end of World War Two. Macron is a keen advocate of the European Union and the euro currency, while Le Pen has proposed taking France out of both.

He also said the names of Macron's 577 candidates in the legislative elections would be announced this Thursday.

In a statement, White House Press secretary Sean Spicer said: "We congratulate President-elect Macron and the people of France on their successful presidential election".

Macron's presidential victory came after a bruising race marked by negative campaigning and a last-minute hacking attack targeting his campaign.

Reuters reported that more than 11 percent of voters chose neither Macron nor Le Pen. Add in the record number of abstentions and spoiled votes in the election, the low turnout and the defeat of traditional parties, and there's a clear sense of alienation within French society.

In the wake of the first round vote, pro-traditional family group Manif Pour Tous, who organised mass protests against same-sex marriage, condemned Macron, calling him the "anti-family" candidate.

Whilst the French public might not have fully embraced the National Front's brand of populism, the election results still mark the party's shift from a fringe force to a political heavyweight.

Macron's foreign policy is expected to largely follow the course set by Hollande, a Socialist under whom Macron served as economy minister from 2014-16.
