JAMES CLAPPER: Comey was 'uneasy' about having dinner with Trump

JAMES CLAPPER: Comey was 'uneasy' about having dinner with Trump

In the Trump era, it has become a cable TV hit and cultural touchstone.

The dinner took place just after the White House had been warned by the then attorney general that Mr Trump's national security advisor Michael Flynn had been "compromised" and was vulnerable to blackmail over ties to Russian Federation.

Several former FBI agents and DOJ attorneys noted that if Trump and Comey did discuss the investigation, there are far more concrete rules on the books governing Comey's behavior, while the White House is controlled more by accepted norms and precedents. Conflicting stories were the topic of much media discussion.

In a pair of tweets on Friday morning he said the reason his surrogates are having a hard time is that he is a "very active President with lots of things happening". And it now explains why all the deserved bad press he has generated against himself led him to threaten to do away with the White House press briefing "and hand out written responses for the sake of accuracy". The FBI director serves a 10-year term but can be replaced by the president. "He said, 'You are not under investigation'". "The tweet speaks for itself".

Mr Trump also defended his media team over criticism at their handling of this week's event - and threatened to abandon the policy of holding daily press briefings.

Possible collusion between Russian Federation and the Trump campaign was once little more than a conspiracy theory, but not anymore.

There was some talk as Trump took office that his administration would do things differently and cut back on press access.

White House Correspondents Association President Jeff Mason, a reporter for Reuters, said the the group would object to any move to cancel White House press briefings.

November 13, 2016: In a CBS "60 Minutes" broadcast after the election, Trump says he hasn't decided whether to keep Comey. Shutting down news briefings, the association said in a statement, "would reduce accountability, transparency, and the opportunity for Americans to see that, in the USA system, no political figure is above being questioned".

Less than a week after Trump fired Comey, the administration has interviewed at least eight candidates to be Federal Bureau of Investigation director, and Trump has said a decision could come before he leaves Friday on his first overseas trip as president.

Cummings quickly clarified: "I have said repeatedly that he could be a great President if ... if ... he takes steps to truly represent all Americans rather than continuing on the divisive and harmful path he is now on".

In the Fox interview, Trump seemed to herald his own work ethic.

July 5, 2016: Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump calls the FBI's decision not to bring criminal charges against Clinton the greatest example yet that the system is "rigged". "Another president, I won't use names, but another president doesn't doing what I'm doing". I'm not saying he is, because there's no publicly available evidence.

"He wanted to stay on", Trump said.
