Man tried to get into cockpit on flight to Hawaii

20 May 2017, 02:17 | Austin Hogan

Fellow passengers told TheDCNF's Barton that the suspect had been pacing in a odd way before the flight left Los Angeles, and upon boarding the plane had sat in the front row of first class, before being told to move further back.

"Two Pacific Command F-22 Raptors from the Hawaii Air National Guard scrambled this morning in response to a reported disturbance on a civilian airliner making an approach to Honolulu International Airport", U.S. Navy Commander Dave Benham told CNBC in an emailed statement.

"The F-22s escorted the airliner to the airport in accordance with homeland defense procedures". The source, who was not authorized to speak publicly, said they believe it was a case of an unruly passenger.

A passenger on the flight posted an Instagram video of the arrest. The FBI arrested him after the plane landed safely. Uskanil was subdued for the rest of the flight and arrested in Honolulu when the plane landed with a military escort.

One passenger who spoke to HawaiiNewsNow said a first-class flight attendant deserved much of the credit for preventing the suspect from reaching the cockpit.

A person who caused a disturbance on a flight between Los Angeles and Honolulu has been detained. The FBI says it is interviewing him.

Delacourt, when asked by a reporter if Uskanil tried to break into the cockpit, said the Turkish man was in the aisle of the plane and it was "unclear what his motivation was". Shortly before 3 a.m.at LAX, airport police responded to a radio call of a passenger, confirmed by a source to be Uskanil, going through a door from the Terminal 5 concourse that led out onto the airfield ramp.

A flight attendant said it must belong to a man in the bathroom.

The trouble with Uskanil actually began about eight hours before the flight departed.

One of the passengers who helped was an off-duty law enforcement officer, the Federal Bureau of Investigation said.

"Crazy! Someone tried to break into the cockpit on my light from LA to Honolulu", the passenger wrote in the caption.

Added Foster, "I thought he was like tripping at first but I guess".

The man did not fight with the other passengers and left a black laptop he had been clutching to his chest on the drink cart, she said.
