President Donald Trump's second-in-command will also deliver a commencement address that day at Grove City College, a Christian school in western Pennsylvania, before returning to his native in on Sunday, where he will deliver a commencement speech at University of Notre Dame.
Ricketts said Pence's record on LGBT issues made him a concerning choice to address students at Commencement. "In addition to that, he passed a budget which supported funding for conversion therapy ... so it feels pretty offensive to have him coming on campus and [giving] a Commencement speech where he tells me how to go out into the world".
Paul Browne, vice president for public affairs and communications at the university, told the Post that the school will not try to stop the walkout.
"During his time as governor of the state of IN and now as a vice president, Pence has targeted the civil rights protections of members of LBGT+ community, rejected the Syrian refugee resettlement program, supported an unconstitutional ban of religious minorities, and fought against sanctuary cities", We Stand For said IN a statement, as quoted by ThinkProgress. "He has advocated and voted repeatedly to restrict and/or to remove rights of LGBT individuals".
Ricketts also said the university administration has not resisted their protest.
Vice President Mike Pence will travel to OH on Saturday afternoon to address troops at Wright-Patterson Air Force Base in the Dayton area as part of "U.S".
A professor of women's and gender studies at Indiana University South Bend, Lidinsky rejects Pence's views on women's health and reproductive health, including his commitment to defund Planned Parenthood and his strict stance on abortion, which "counters sound medical decisions that women make with their doctors".
The Michiana Alliance for Democracy said it believes Pence has a record of infringing upon basic human rights. "His theocratic doctrine and myopic view of what is essential for the good of his state led to disastrous legislation that continues to reverberate throughout Indiana".
Organizers expect as many as 1,000 participants based on the turnout for recent anti-Trump events in South Bend and the response so far on Facebook, where they have created an "event" for the protest.
"We invite all students, faculty, and families who will be attending the Commencement ceremony to walk out with us as we take back our graduation and show our dissatisfaction with the University's selection of Mike Pence as honored speaker", reads a Facebook eventpage for the protest, which says more than 100 people have agreed to participate.
"I think that with the protests coming out, there has been this sort of perception that Notre Dame doesn't want Vice President Pence here speaking at Commencement", he said. Not gonna lie, things like this gives me hope for the future.
