Third Confederate monument taken down by New Orleans

20 May 2017, 12:05 | Marion Schneider

New Orleans has already removed statues of Confederate President Jefferson Davis and Confederate Gen. P.G.T. Beauregard.

"Today we take another step in defining our city not by our past but by our bright future", New Orleans Mayor Mitch Landrieu said in a statement to the press.

The city started removing the landmarks in late April after the New Orleans City Council voted in 2015 to remove the four Confederate markers.

Landrieu also said that the removal would cause some traffic issues with the following street closures: Moss Street between Desaix Boulevard and Esplanade Avenue and North Carrolton Avenue between Esplanade Avenue, and City Park Avenue will be closed to vehicular and pedestrian traffic.

New Orleans still has one more monument to remove. The statue of Lee - who surrendered the Confederate Army to Union Gen. Ulysses S. Grant in 1865, effectively ending the Civil War - is the first to be taken down in the light of day. Warning: The video below contains profanity: The statue will be the third Confederate monument removed by the city.

Syrian regime denies U.S. allegations of mass killings at prison
Video from the group showed rescuers pulling children from the rubble of a multistory building. Amnesty International has said 13,000 people were killed in four years at the prison.

The city plans to have extra security around the Lee statue Friday morning and will cordon off a one-block radius around Lee Circle to cars in anticipation of protests.

How does Hillyer feel about the other confederate statues? The plan to take down high-profile post-Civil War monuments has sparked legal challenges and demonstrations, both in favor and against the monuments. Protesters for and against the removal were in attendance Tuesday night, some waving American flags some waving Confederate flags, as happened when the Davis statue was removed. Of the Confederate past, he says: "It's my history, but it's not my heritage".

Landrieu has been criticized by activists with the pro-monument group Save Our Circle for funding the removal of public monuments with private donations that have never been officially disclosed. Some argue the monuments symbolize racial injustice and slavery. There is no official word on if the statue of Robert E. Lee will remain, or be removed tonight.

Workers ripped away landscaping from around the monument as heavy equipment moved in to remove the statue from his 60-foot tall perch. Many Southern areas have done the same since nine black parishioners were fatally shot in 2015 by an avowed racist at a church in Charleston, South Carolina. How does he feel about the use of the confederate flag in promoting the keeping of the monuments? It was unveiled in 1884.
