Trump will not announce Israel embassy move on overseas trip

20 May 2017, 02:09 | Austin Hogan

"None of us in Israel's intelligence community likes this event".

Trump phoned Netanyahu after his phone call to Jordanian King Abdullah II, the two leaders discussed Trump's upcoming visit to Israel, Haaretz newspaper reported on Wednesday, citing senior Israeli officials, APA reports quoting sputniknews.

The longstanding US stance is that the site is in Jerusalem, full stop.

So Trump, like Bill Clinton and George W. Bush before him, promised to move the embassy in the heat of a presidential campaign and then reneged with things got real. Trump's hopes of brokering some sort of Israeli-Palestinian peace deal are apparently alive, and he plans to meet with Palestinian National Authority president Mahmoud Abbas in Bethlehem next week. The White House disputed the account.

The prisoners, jailed for offenses linked to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, seek better conditions, including more family visits. "The paper quickly gets to the heart of the matter, saying that hesitance to recognize Jerusalem as Israel's capital, because of 'fear of Islamic backlash, ' is not policy 'based on principle, fairness and historical right, but it is based exclusively on weakness and fear'". Netanyahu's office said it was astonished by the comment.

However, intent on brokering what he terms "the ultimate deal", the U.S. leader is being cautious not to anger the Palestinians and discourage participation in peace negotiations with the Israelis, a senior White House official told Bloomberg on condition of anonymity, due to the sensitivity of the issue.

The Western Wall was part of the retaining wall around the biblical Jewish temple complex that once sat on what Jews call the Temple Mount. So far, the worldwide community does not recognize Jerusalem as the capital of Israel and not a single foreign country bases their embassies in the city.

Trump's security operation in Israel has been named "Operation Blue Shield", and yesterday's joint exercise focused on the various sites Trump will visit, aimed at reducing any potential risks to the high-level official and his entourage. But the USA has withheld recognition of that control until there is a deal.

"Jerusalem is the eternal and undivided capital of Israel". The Palestinians see it as the capital of a future independent state.

Congress recognized Jerusalem as Israeli in 1995, but successive presidents have waived a provision in that law that requires the United States to move the embassy there from Tel Aviv.

Moving the embassy had been a campaign promise of Trump's stretching back to the Republican primary.

In her Senate confirmation hearing, Haley she "absolutely" supports such a move.
