Brexit Negotiators Will Look at Terms of Divorce Before Future Relationship

David Davis calls for 'new and special partnership' with Brussels as Brexit talks begin

From David to Michel, a guide to top people in Brexit talks

"As Brexit talks begin, it's important the voice of universities is heard clearly in the negotiations", Universities UK president and University of Kent vice-chancellor Dame Julia Goodfellow said. "We must first tackle the uncertainties caused by Brexit", centering on citizens living on each other's territory, border arrangements between Ireland and the United Kingdom and the amount that Britain stands to pay to get out of its previous European Union commitments, Barnier said.

"In the first step, we will deal with the most pressing issues".

In the second step, "we will scope our future partnership". The referendum was declared back on June 23, 2016, but Britain failed to make progress.

So what happened in the eight hours between Mrs Davis and Mr Barnier exchanging gifts on their shared passion for hiking - cue instant quips about both sides having "mountains to climb" - and the end of day press conference that did not quite go according to script?

BRITAIN should ensure that employers retain access to both skilled and unskilled workers from the European Union as it begins talks to leave the bloc or there is a risk of damaging United Kingdom businesses, a research report by two think tanks said on Monday.

Germany's Merkel vows not to give up on USA free trade deal
But Merkel told an annual German industry congress Tuesday: "I will continue to push for us to move forward here, for us not to put the project on ice".

While the European Union negotiating team led by Barnier has been ready for months, British efforts on Brexit stalled even after it triggered the two-year process on March 29.

Adding to the complexity is Britain's current political situation, as May lost her Conservative majority in parliament after a snap election, sparking wide criticism of her leadership and worries about how long May and her cabinet would stay in power.

The Brexit talks are taking place now despite the UK's inconclusive general election results, which saw the ruling Conservative party lose seats and the opposition Labour party gaining a dramatic rise in the number of votes.

Still, British Foreign Secretary Boris Johnson remained upbeat Monday and thinks that the Brexit negotiations will yield "a happy resolution that can be done with profit and honor for both sides".

Johnson also urged Europeans to look further down the road. British Foreign Secretary Boris Johnson issued a statement about the UK's future plans without its 27 other European Union members: "The most important thing for us is to look to the horizon, raise our eyes to the horizon".
