Europe must do more to defend liberal world order- Germany's Schaeuble

German Chancellor Angela Merkel says Pope Francis encouraged her to work to preserve the Paris climate accord despite the U.S. withdrawal and shared her aim to "bring down walls", and not build them.

Speaking on a panel with non-governmental organizations pushing for more social and environmentally-friendly policies from the world's leading economies, Merkel said the U.S.is a key G-20 partner and Trump is welcome at the summit she'll host in the port city of Hamburg on July 7-8. "I want us to reach a good agreement and this should be in the interests of both sides", she added.

"An agreement ... would affect around 30 percent of global trade", she said. -European Union deal, the Trans-Atlantic Trade and Investment Partnership, also look poor.

Merkel and Trump have had an uneasy relationship since Trump took office in January.

SpiceJet and Boeing sign MoU for 40 737 MAX airplanes
Qatar Airways firms up an order for 20 Boeing BA.N 737 MAX jets after letter of intent a year ago for up to 60 737 MAX 8 jets. Twenty of SpiceJet's provisional order for 40 MAX 10s were conversions from an existing order for other 737 models.

But Merkel told an annual German industry congress Tuesday: "I will continue to push for us to move forward here, for us not to put the project on ice". There won't be a concluding statement "unless everyone has agreed" to it, she added.

"This (G20) agenda assumes that we are a part of a world in which we work together through multilateral cooperation", Merkel said of her discussion with the Pope.

"Of course we can think about a common finance minister if the conditions are right and if we do not communalize (debts) in the wrong place", she said.

Merkel stressed she was also open to the idea of a eurozone budget - another one of Macron's suggestions - "as long as it's clear that this will truly strengthen structures and do meaningful things". "We shouldn't say what is not possible; we should simply consider what makes sense".
