Halep and Svitolina into French quarters

20 June 2017, 04:26 | Pamela Mathis

Britain's Andy Murray reached his fourth consecutive French Open semi-final with a four-set win over Kei Nishikori on Wednesday in Paris.

Nishikori has won just two of 10 matches against Murray, but can't remember beating the British player at the U.S. Open past year.

Murray, who was runner-up to Novak Djokovic at Roland Garros past year, will meet 2015 champion Stan Wawrinka for a spot in Sunday's final.

This match is a toss-up in my eyes, as Wawrinka does have the edge on clay and is playing better tennis overall, but it's tough to bet against Murray and that defense.

"It's never fun to lose a match, but I took a great experience from this match to play on the center court", he said.

In windy conditions Murray double-faulted to lose serve in the third game and Nishikori pinged a forehand victor past him to move 5-2 ahead before serving out the set.

Murray was the stronger player throughout this one, and the struggles he suffered in the buildup to this Grand Slam showdown now feel a long time ago, as he notched a 6-3, 6-4, 6-4 win.

Halep, who was runner-up at Roland Garros in 2014, will next face second-seeded Karolina Pliskova.

The 32-year-old is the oldest man to make the last four at Roland Garros since Jimmy Connors in 1985.

Murray was just the steadier, although he also played some poor games, dropping serve twice in the third set - both times immediately after breaking Nishikori - and once to start the fourth.

Do you something awesome to share with the world?

In the women's category, Halep defeated 21st-seeded C. Suarez Navarro of Spain 6-1, 6-1 and Garcia defeated fellow compatriot Alize Cornet 6-2, 6-4 in an all-French affair again on Philippe-Chatrier.

The third-seeded Halep, who trailed 5-0 in the first set, was down 5-1 in the second.

"It's not like I played a great point the next point".

"I think if someone is intentionally slowing a match down they should be punished for that, but it's a rule that is going to be challenging regardless of whether there is a clock on the court or not", added Murray.

"I came in playing garbage. Once I started to get into a rhythm I was able to keep him a bit further away from the baseline and that made a big difference". But, yeah, a little bit gained some confidence during second and third. "He [Nishikori] was dictating all of the points in the first set".

"You have Ivan Lendl in your team, the guy has so much experience".

The three-time Grand Slam champion dropped the first set before prevailing 2-6, 6-1, 7-6 (7-0), 6-1.
