Hike Messenger launches Hike Wallet
Homegrown messaging app Hike today added payments feature that will allow its over 100 million users to transfer money and recharge/pay mobile bills through the messaging platform. The startup, valued at $1.4 billion a year ago after securing $175 million from investors including Tencent Holdings Ltd. and Foxconn Technology Group, now lets its 100 million-plus users move cash between banks and to other people through the country's Unified Payments Interface gateway.
With Hike Wallet users can also recharge their phones and pay postpaid bills right from inside the app.
In an endeavour to stay true to its promise of simplifying how people connect and interact with content and services on mobile, Hike Messenger announced the launch of Hike 5.0 on Tuesday in New Delhi, with the biggest update being Hike Wallet, the mobile payment feature.
The messaging app has also introduced "Blue Packets" which is an envelope that users can insert money into and send to their friends. Users can send these to friends or family on special occasions and add personalised messages.
The new update has also brought in improved user interface as well as new features to the camera on the app. The transfer can be carried out even if the recipient isn't on Hike Messenger.

A nifty addition to Hike 5.0 is the all new "Magic Selfie" feature.
With the launch of Hike 5.0, Hike has also reduced the app size to just 25MB despite adding all these features and has also added 128-bit SSL encryption that ensures that communication across the air and wire networks, is completely encrypted. While WhatsApp co-founder Brian Acton spoke publicly about plans to launch digital payments, Hike's CEO, KavinMittal Bharti, has never made the company's intentions public before surprising the industry with the announcement. It's been built by our users for our users.
Last but not the least, version 5 of Hike is reintroducing the app's social network-like features, which took a hike past year, when Snapchat-esque Stories (48 hours and not 24 hours) was launched.
Hike 5.0 is available on iOS and Android platforms.
He added that with Blue Packets, sending and receiving money will get a whole new meaning. "We're really excited about the possibilities with this and can't wait to see how people use it", added Bharti.
